The original song ("The Road is Open Again", written in the 1930s by Dick Powell) was covered - with dark irony - as the theme to HBO's The Plot Against America. I filked this song in that hopeful spirit of Powell, which is why it includes of filk the intro verse which was not included in the HBO theme.
lyrics
Noon, it is the start of the term;
It is the part of the term
When hope is high.
Noon, the old replaced with the new,
Our freedoms, battered and bruised,
Still did not die
Noon, upon the twentieth,
Gone is yesterday.
There's a new day in view.
Doesn’t matter if you
Are a woman, n-b, or man.
There is light through the gloom;
There are smiles in the zoom
'Cause the road is open again!
There is hope in the souls
As we all take our roles.
Time to fix all that has been rent.
All across lake and land,
Darkness turns into chance
'Cause the road is open again!
There's an eagle blue
In the White House too,
Watching over our new president there.
Hear his rousing call
For Americans all:
“Let us, start repairs!”
There's a new day in view.
Doesn’t matter if you
Label yourself as cis or trans.
Much to do, to be sure,
But for now, we’ve endured
And the road is open again!
There's a new day in view.
Doesn’t matter if you
Are a woman, n-b, or man.
Much to do, to be sure,
But for now, we’ve endured
And the road is open again!
